There's a knocking, no, a crashing at the door. "Just a moment!" Fareeja calls out over her shoulder as she dons her cloak before opening the door.

    "Miro! You can fly again?“

The little dragon does a somersault in the air and cheers: "I've finally stopped hiccuping today – at last!"

As they both reach the marketplace, Fareeja takes her usual spot in front of the town hall door, waits a moment and begins without further ado:

"After marching across the hot sand at Aurora's oasis, I came across a large river delta. You can't imagine how welcoming a discovery that was; the cool water was a real treat for my tired feet!
I looked for a cosy spot at the edge of a tributary, surrounded by a thicket of reeds..."

What did Fareeja experience at the river bank – write in the forum and continue her adventure!

It was as my feet were dangling in the water and I was relaxing that it struck me how very different this World was.

    It was noisy.

I sat and listened making out the different elements of the cacophony . .there was the plink of water drops landing, and rippling outwards; the sound of splashes and drips as something broke the water surface tension; the swish as the reeds bowed and swept the tops of the rivulets; and there was the sound of rushes rustling and gossiping like a pair of magpies.

In this World there were the soprano tunes of birdsong, the basso profundo of frogs and toads and the myriad harmonies of insects and rustling creatures. A Symphonic World. Fareeja mused over this, her eyes closed as the cool water soothed and refreshed her tired feet. For now it was refreshing - soon it may become cold, but not yet . . not yet.

It was a sour note that alerted Fareeja to something being amiss. At first she didn't know what had roused her from her reverie; but she knew something had.

Filtering out the noises she finally heard it. A stealthy slithering noise . . to her right. As she focussed she heard the river harmonies falter and fall silent as the intruder was recognised. One repeating motif remained. . a two note phrase . . .a long note followed by a short. . . also to her right.

Looking carefully, trying not to startle whatever it was that was approaching she peered around to her right. There it was. The camouflage was good; at first glimpse it looked like a cluster of reed blooms, the shade of dusky pink catching the light like the puffed cotton that burst out of the dark browny-green reeds. She watched, fascinated as the dewlap of the creature expanded, vibrated and released the captured air with the signature two tone phrase.

Then the stealthy rustle caught her attention. This was even harder to spot . . the colours of green and brown blended so well with the stalks and mud that it took her a few moments to realise what she was seeing. A snake like creature, sidewinding through the reeds on an oblique course towards the toad singer.

Her hand closed on a stone just the right size for her palm, and she held it close, the coolness seeping into her palm. Just a moment more . . .

Moving her arm slowly, keeping her eyes on the snake creature, she readied herself. . .

    Now.

She released the stone and watched it skim across the water - plash - plash - plash . . plash . . .'Yes! 5!'

    Her personal record.

And the snake creature? gone. Vanished, as if it had never been there, just a flash of tail as it disappeared among the reeds, looking for easier prey. And the toad singer? His voice had fallen still, and he was no longer where he had been. Quartering the area, she looked for him. Nothing; he must have gone somewhere safer.

Fareeja settled back on her cloak, and decided to have just a few minutes more to enjoy the peaceful river scene. Perhaps the river orchestra would start up again?

So when a croaky voice spoke by her knee she was somewhat startled.

The voice belonged to a subtle shaded and subtle minded creature called Amadeus. He was the Guardian for this tributary of the river, and, like his colouring, preferred to be subtle in his guardianship.

They exchanged stories and a friendship was formed.

When twilight fell the river orchestra played again, and Fareeja was once again impressed at the harmonies. She tried humming along, but preferred to be the listener, listening for the many participants and admiring the talent thus demonstrated.

As darkness fell the fireflies sparkled and danced to the memory of the music, and the night birds wheeled and flirted with the night-darkened water, the moon scattering glints of reflection as the breeze ruffled the surface.

    A beautiful night.
