    Day Two:

    In my tradition this is Boxing Day - St Stephen's Day - and the traditional carol for today is Good King Wenceslas.

    But what is the story behind this Carol?

    Wenceslas was a 10th-century Catholic Duke of Bohemia also known as Vaclav the Good, and was martyred after being assassinated by his wicked brother, Boleslaw the Bad. Wenceslas's remains are interred in St Vitus's cathedral in Prague, and he was recently made patron saint of the Czech Republic. His Saint's Day is September 28.

    The verse is the invention of J M Neale (1818-66), and it was first published in 1853.

    The charitable giving which the carol promotes is an old part of Boxing Day tradition (now, alas, supplanted by a spree at the first day of the sales). But nobody has ever understood why Neale makes Wenceslas feel impelled to take pine logs to a peasant who already lives next to a forest, nor is it clear what significance should be ascribed to the footprint in the snow mentioned in the last verse.

    Day Four

    an extract:

    When with the ever-circling years
    Comes round the age of gold;
    When peace shall over all the earth
    Its ancient splendors fling,
    And the whole world give back the song
    Which now the angels sing!

    Day Six:

    A New Year Carol

    Here we bring new water from the well so clear,
    For to worship God with, this happy New Year.
    Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine;
    The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.

    Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her toe,
    Open you the West Door, and turn the Old Year go.
    Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine;
    The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.

    Sing reign of Fair Maid, with gold upon her chin,
    Open you the East Door, and let the New Year in.
    Sing levy dew, sing levy dew, the water and the wine;
    The seven bright gold wires and the bugles that do shine.

    Day Eight

    Downtime

    My heart warms
    The mouse snitches
    Green baize subsides
    Calm blue ocean
    Switches our world
    Smiles serene

    The world recedes
    As Mages’ gossip
    And Druids muse
    While Sorcerers share
    Sowing the seeds
    Our friendships blossom

    Soothing balm
    To frayed nerves
    Sees Sorrel Balls sown
    And magic performed
    For Miramagia
    Flows through our veins
